Cliffe Theatre travel from Russia to Newcastle during the production of these two very different one-act comedy plays.
The Proposal (Directed by Jackie Wilson) is set at the end of the nineteenth century where a nervous young man visits his neighbour to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The father is delighted, his daughter appears but the road to true happiness proves far from smooth. The action of the play takes place in the drawing room of Chubukov’s house in late nineteenth century Russia.
In Marrers we are transported to the 1980s and a coal mine in Tyneside where two friends or ‘marrers’ find themselves trapped underground. Despite their situation the comic banter rarely stops and an unlikely source of help is put to good use to aid their rescue. The action of the play takes place in a Northumbrian coal mine during the 1980s. ‘Song for Marrers’ written and performed by Mike Wood.
