SYNOPSIS
Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots in Coal Yard Alley to her success as a celebrated actress and hard won place in the heart of King Charles II. It is set in the heady world of Restoration theatre when, after the restrictions of the Puritans, everyone was after a good time. But at a time when women are second class citizens, can her charm and spirit protect her from the dangers of court?
This bawdy, funny and poignant play premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe, London in 2015. It transferred to the West End the following year winning the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
